This is my quick go-to place for a fast and delicious Bahn Mi. The staff are all very nice even though communication is nearly impossible. Just simply say what number of sandwich you would like and the lady behind the counter will make it. They also have some very authentic other dishes. Most of them I have not had before. The grocery side of Hong Phat is rather typical of an Asian market but they do have some very unusual items hidden here and there. Bahn Mi costs $3 and takes about 5 minutes from the time you walk in until you walk out.

I love their Banh Mi! Best hands down in town. They stuff their subs with meat and such, unlike other places. I always order the grilled pork banh mi and its consistently tender and moist, never dry meat. As for their grocery items, they have a wide variety of things. When I'm lazy to cook, I just get a whole tilapia and have them deep dry it for me. Friendly people, small place, but fairly dirty near the freezers.

This place is the closest to a great Banh Mi! I don't like the service cause sometimes old Vietnamese ladies comes and cut you off and start ordering before you. The lady that makes the sandwich is usually busy so we can't order since she's the only one who speaks English! Which sucks. And she does add more stuff for you if you ask her. The downfall is they run out of bread fast! And sometime the place gets overcrowded! Cheap food and sometimes you find a good deal on Asian food.

I ordered the pork bahn mi (#8... not BBQ pork, and not sweet pork, just regular pork) and spring rolls. The spring rolls were sitting on the counter, not refrigerated, so I was a bit leery at first. However, the package was cool to the touch so I went with it. The spring rolls ended up being delicious! $6 for 4 (big) spring rolls is a pretty good price, and they tasted great. The peanut dipping sauce had an odd mint flavor which kind of threw me off guard. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't your traditional peanut sauce. It grew on me, though, and I enjoyed it. The pork bahn mi was decent. For $3.50, I really can't complain. It was just a lot of bread. If I go again, I will order 2 sandwiches and put the ingredients from both into one sandwich. On this trip I ended up picking off about 1/3 of the bread. The flavors were pretty good, though. The raw jalapeno was a surprise, but I'm thankful they slice it so it's just one big piece you can easily remove if you're not into that. Overall, I'm definitely a fan for the price. It's not the best bahn mi I've had (that would be at Oh Mai), but for the price it instantly becomes a top competitor. The spring rolls were fantastic once I got used to the minty peanut sauce. I will probably go back.

I've only been to Hong Phat less than a handful of times but from my little experience and from what everyone's been telling me, the food is cheap and delicious. The eggrolls were super yummy and could easily beat restaurant quality at 3 units for $2. What a steal! Plus they have all sorts of vietnamese food in the back counter at inexpensive prices. One of the banh bao or banh mi (less than $2.00 for a banh bao and $3.00 for the banh mi) could fill you up. I never really looked at their other products so can't comment on that. Overall, good place for prepared food and snacks. Give it a try

Born and raised on the Westside of Salt Lake and never in my life have I entered into the doors of what looks like an old 7-Eleven next to The Tooth Dr. (free plugs all day!). While looking for some spring rolls (cuz I didn't wanna travel south passed the Drive-In's to Tay-Do) one summer afternoon, I hook a right into the hella small parking lot of this fine establishment. When I opened one of the double doors the smell hit me! And I was feelin it! I seen my aunt in there but she looked too focused on what she was getting so I just did a lil head nod like you do when you see someone you know but you ain't got time to chop it up. Anyways, I proceed to the back and pick up two of them spring roll joints then head out. Just like that, in and out! Anyways those were cool but I'm not here to talk spring rolls. I'm here to talk sandwich. Specifically Banh Mi. I tasted other Banh Mi and it was cool cuz of the price ($6-$7) but the price over here was $3.50! $3.50! Three fifty (for my math story problem people)! Three fifty! Three dollars and fifty cents! Three fiddy (in the hood)! Free feefty (for my FOB's)! I didn't even taste it until like 10min ago, now I'm writing you. It was hella good! Go get you one, or two or even three! Cuz at $3.50 I'm there all day! Long story short, take a gander into a place you wouldn't normally go in to. Maybe you'd find something you like. Oh, and my aunt was getting some kind of cooked meat. It smelled hella good tho. I'm getting some duck next time.

Can't get better than $3.50 good banh mi! The "deli" is located at the back of the store and the banh mi are to die for! I tried to buy 2 pounds of pork shoulder, but the older Asian worker was somewhat rude saying they don't sell by pounds. If you are nearby and want a cheap and good lunch or dinner, stop by for some good banh mi and maybe stay away from the grumpy worker at the meat station!

Since my initial review last year, I've notice great changes. I've gone back to Hong Phat simply because they' are only a block away from my house. So far, I've bought 5 spring rolls without any issue. I've also purchased plenty of other hot food items since then. My recent experiences has been great, so I've updated my rating. With the springrolls, I always buy the stuffed tofu that's in some type of oily savory sauce. I believe its stuff with meat. Very delicious. They also serve bahn mi of different meats. Try the BBQ pork, also very delicious.

Great sandwiches and great hot food and CHEAP! Definitely recommend the iced vietnamese coffee...so rich and delicious, but probably not for the health conscious

Don't be thrown off by the shabby exterior of this grocery store/deli, or the smell of the seafood when you walk into the store. Once you navigate your way past the cashiers, the seafood counter, you find yourself at the deli. This is where all the magic happens. At the deli, they have a wide assortment of Vietnamese foods, ranging from cha gio (fried spring rolls), fish, stuffed bitter melon, to a variety of Vietnamese desserts with a coconut milk base. Next to that, there is an area where they prepare banh mi (they go for $3 each). There are several options to choose from. There's the typical dac biet which contains an assortment of cold cuts, there is char siu, thit nuong (grilled pork - my personal favourite), xiu mai (which is sausage) and a few others. The sandwiches are made right then and there, ensuring freshness. Of all the types they offer, I've had the dac biet, thit nuong and xiu mai. Of the three, I would recommend the thit nuong, which has been consistently good. The dac biet, can have some chewy meats, so beware. The xiu mai wasn't bad, but it is a hot sandwich, and the sausage can be a little on the runny side. Overall the banh mi made here are comparable to the ones made in Las Vegas, if not better. I definitely don't mind driving to the west side to get their yummy sandwiches. They also have a selection of ready to go boxes that include a variety of summer rolls, noodle salads, rice rolls and much more. These go for $5 a box, which is pretty affordable. They also offer desserts like banh bo (steamed rice cake), banh da lon (layered tapioca cake), and the like. The desserts I think are $3. I've tried the summer rolls with shrimp, and the banh cuon (rice rolls). I thought the sauce accompanying the summer rolls was a bit on the sweet side. The banh cuon were tasty, and were very smooth. Overall, their deli selections are delicious. I would recommend going on Saturdays, that's when they have the greatest selections, but if you do go on Saturday, expect to wait in line because they get busy!

Small market with a little of everything from dried good to produce to home decor usage to DVD and movies. They also have a banh mi deli in the back along with a lot of prepackaged goods. Let's just say...we ordered two banh mi and only could eat a quarter of one. It was that bad. I came here because of the high ravings on yelp, but my goodness I wish the people here know the taste a true good banh mi. The roasted pork was okay no flavoring. Very bland. Overall this place is not as great as everybody claims. Try it for yourself.

I felt the need to update this review because the past two times I've been here there was an item in my grocery bag that was off. The first time it was the pickle daikon and carrot. When I opened it, it had a horrible smell, I had to throw it out. Today I bought banh mi, it felt soft and I should have return it there. Got home, opened the bag and it was indeed old bread. Thank God for the oven! I placed it in the oven and it came out good as new. Bread was crunchy and whole sandwich was delicious. If this was Cali, I would never return after two bad experiences. But this is Utah, not many options and they do sell authentic Vietnamese food, so I will return.

Great Asian grocery store. Good selection of produce, sauces, spices, and other ingredients for all your Asian cooking needs. Excellent deli and prepared foods counter. Shout out for the banh mi - Vietnamese sandwiches at the deli (I had to write out "banh mi" because if you do a search on yelp Salt Lake City for "banh mi" it turns up zero results... and that's just sad). I was skeptical of the $3 sweet pork sandwich - my favorite place in CA charge $2.50, and everything is typically less expensive in Utah - and was amazed. It's HUGE. A giant, filling, delicious $3 lunch. Excellent little place to pick up Vietnamese sandwiches.

this is out of the way for me coming from the south, but i drive out to this place for the banh mi. combination is my favorite! the staff is always friendly and i've never been disappointed in my sandwich.

This isn't a restaurant, but a South East Asian Market that has a deli in it. I can't say much for the groceries, since I don't grocery shop there, but they make THEE most delicious spring rolls than any Vietnamese restaurant I have ever been to. & i'm a Vietnamese spring roll connoisseur! & they are VERY reasonably priced. I'm a big fan.

This tiny market on the west side of Salt Lake City appears to be a converted convenience store. There was a distinctively fishy smell that hit me as I entered, the source of which was presently clear: there's a large fish counter in the back, as well at least two live crustacean selections housed in boxes on the ground. I hung a right at the counter and was at their hot food area. I was surprised at the large selection available here. Next time I stop by, I'll need to avail myself of some of the tasty looking spring rolls. This trip is all about the sandwich, though. I noted that there are several versions, so I may have to branch out and give others a try in the future, but I figured it made sense to start with the house special. The house special version is their number four. I ordered one and when she looked confused and asked a question that I didn't understand, I clarified by holding up four fingers. The prep area for the food is miniscule. It's actually difficult to fathom how all of the food under the heat lamps could possibly have been made in the tiny kitchen. After a few minutes, she handed me a rather large bag and, on peering inside, I saw that there are many more than one sandwich. Thinking she may have mixed my order up, I clarified that I only ordered one. She separated one from the pack, puts it into a bag, and I was off to pay up front. It was only when I was driving and about five blocks away that I realized what had happened: when I held up four fingers to her question that I didn't catch, she took that to mean that I wanted four sandwiches. Since they were a steal at $3 each, I feel horrible at the mix up and wish I'd paid for them all. And then I took the first bite and felt bad that I hadn't paid for all of them for a whole different reason. That is one seriously tasty sandwich. It comes wrapped in a small piece of parchment to hold the fixings inside, secured around the sandwich with the rubber band. The bread roll is huge. Once I started eating, though, it's clear that it is mostly air and probably even less bread substance than in your average deli sandwich. The fillings are deliciously balanced. I love the pate they are using but didn't get a chance to ask if they made in house. The pickled veggies are crisp if a bit sparse and are dominated by daikon and cucumber. In fact, I could have used more fillings in general to compliment the massive roll. Then again, my standard of comparison cost over $8 at Spice Kit, so for the price, this is plenty of food for the cost. I would probably have ordered two and ordered extra peppers had I not been on my way to a second purveyor.

Finally tried this today. Don't let the appearance and odor scare you away. It only smells like a fish market because it's a fish market. From the look of things, a good fish market. They just specialize in fishier stuff than westerners usually prefer. I've also shopped here before for asian groceries and while they don't have the broadest selection on redwood road, their prices are among the best. I had the bbq pork banh mi because the sweet pork is only available at the end of the week. As others have said the bread is generously sized but very light in texture. I thoroughly enjoyed the sandwich, at $3 i think it is an outstanding deal, but if you were expecting meat to veg ratios similar to what you'd get down the road at Subway (for twice the cost) you would be disappointed. If you wanted a big meal, buy two, or try the spring rolls. I also had an iced thai tea with tapioca bubbles in it that was also well worth it. I will certainly be back.

My boyfriend discovered this place because he works near it and it is a gem! We love the banh mi sandwiches and steam buns from the counter in back. The bubble tea is filling and they give you more bubbles than you'll know what to do with. I always browse the imported candy and buy some to try out. All in all, we love it. Cheap for lunch on the go and always good for an adventurous candy experiment. (We always get food to go since it is a grocery store there isn't a place to eat. FYI)

Not the cleanest supermarket I've ever been to. But all of the employees have been really nice to me every time I stop by. There's so much you can buy at this supermarket and a lot of variety in Asian products and produce that you can buy here! They also sell pots, pans, knifes, plates, bowls, and other kitchen appliances that you might need if you feel like cooking! I love their little deli that they have at the back of the store. I honestly think they make some of the BEST Vietnamese sandwiches in Utah. They also sell a bunch of other Vietnamese entrees like Steamed Eggrolls, Spring Rolls, Vermicelli Noodles and BBQ beef, etc. Great place for your dose of Asian food!

Amazing Vietnamese market!! The smell takes a moment to get used to but it is well worth it once you look around. I went for lunch and had the most amazing Vietnamese BBQ pork sandwich. While there I also picked up some peach wafer crackers. I will definitely be going back to stock up on snacks and cookies when I go get lunch again.
